Poole Harbour Added to Project
Work is going ahead at 2 sites on the RSPB\'s Arne Reserve at Poole Harbour. This pituresque natural harbour has become a welcome addition to the EU LIFE Bittern Project.
For the bittern, Poole Harbour is a huge banqueting area having England\'s largest reedbed. Bitterns already winter at the Harbour but because most of the reedbed is tidal no bitterns have nested yet.
The RSPB plans to restore an existing area of reedbed at Arne nature reserve. It is hoped that by repairing banks and sluices and by digging new pools for fish this will provide more feeding area for bitterns. Combined with the foraging areas in the nearby tidal habitats it is hoped that bitterns will find enough suitable habitat and be encouraged to breed.
